Instructions ============ ** Important Note ** - Each steps which you operate the modem, you have to notice the modem's light signals on the front panel and record the signal status for your results and data analysis. - You must write the command which you use or experiment step or results in "[...]" in your report. 1. Plugging the cable from computer to modems, and modems to PABX are neccessary before plugging modems' power supplies. 2. After switching on modems' power supplies, you turn on the computer and run a communication software(ProCom Plus Version 2.0 in used in this experiment). You have to notice the display status of the software on a screen. 3. You issue a command to the modem for getting a setting-up (or configuration) information [view SCP]. 4. We have two operation modes for a modem connection : dialup line and leased-line operation. You have to notice what are differents of these. First, we will operate the dial-up line and then the leased-line. 4.1 Dial-up line operation 1) You must check the line from two modems to PABX are connected correctly and you have to know what is the extension number of each modem 2) You issue commands to the modem for a number dialing [tone and pulse dialing]. You must set one modem to auto-answer [ auto-answer ring number] and the other one to original mode before the number dialing command. 3) Repeat step number 2 again but on the opposite side. 4) You store the number to modem's NVSRM [STN : Stored Telephone Number]. Then you issue a command to see the stored numbers [view STN] before issuing a speed dialing command [speed dialing]. After the connection is successful. You disconnect the line [hang up to disconnec]. 5) Repeat step number 4 again but on the oppersite site. 6) You make a connection again and retain it. Now, you can send to and receive some message from the other one; for example, typing information to say hello or ask some questions on your terminal [ if you want to see both sides' message appear on your terminal, you must set the terminal to chat mode. you can use help key to find this command ]. 7) Next you use a file transfer facility of the software. First, you can use the directory command to see a name of a files which you would like to send ( the file should be a ASCII file and file's size is not larger then 1 KB because of a limitaion of disk space). Then you use KERMIT protocol to transfer the file [ You can use help key to find this command]. 8) The other way for files transfer is a entering to a host mode. After this mode is actived, the software will let you to select protocol options. You have to select a appropriate protocol to active it. You can try other protocol options it you want. 9) After ending of files transfer, you then disconnect the line. You will use the other way to connect the line by using the telephone hand-set dialing instead of modem dialing. When the connection is successfull, you switch the Voice-Data Switch to make the two modems connection[9.1]. You should be aware that if you hang-up the telephone hand-set before switching the switch, you will lose the connection. If you lose the connection, you repeat this step again. 4.2 Leased-line Operation. 1) The other way of a modem communication is a leased-line operation. To do this operation you must change the exciting line connection. You must change the exciting line connection. You must connect the line directly from your modem to the other one and also disconnect to PABX on the both sides. 2) Issue the command to both modem to select leased-line operation [leased-line operation]. 3) Issue the command to one of the two modem to set it into the original mode [originate a call] and to the other one into the answering mode [go answer call]. 4) After two modems are connected together, you enter to the chart mode and send some message to the other one. 5) Next you use a file transfer facility of the software. First, you use the directory command to see a name of files which you like to send (the file should be a ASCII file and file's size id not a larger than 1 KB because of a limitation of a disk space). Then you use KERMIT protocol to transfer file[You can use help key to find this command). 6) After ending the file transfer, you operate the modem command on these steps: - Can you switch to use the telephone hand-set[6.1]? - Can you establish the connection by using he telephone hand-set first then transfer to the modem [2]? 7) Now you finish the modem connection experiment. You change the leased-line operation to dial-up line operation again and make sure that the lines are connected correctly. You can test this operation mode by repeating the dial-up commands again. Questions ========= 1. What are the differences between dial-up operation and leased-line operation? 2. If the modem does not seem to hang-up when a ring comming. What do you do to solve this problem? 3. What happen if communication speed of two modems are different?
